Phishers use any number of different social engineering and e-mail spoofing ploys to try to trick their victims. In a recent case before the Federal Trade Commission (FTC), a 17-year-old male sent out messages purporting to be from America Online that said there had been a billing problem with recipients' AOL accounts. The perpetrator's e-mail used AOL logos and contained legitimate links. If recipients clicked on the "AOL Billing Center" link, however, they were taken to a spoofed AOL Web page that asked for personal information, including credit card numbers, personal identification numbers (PINs), social security numbers, banking numbers, and passwords. Phishing is a variation on the word fishing: fishers (and phishers) set out hooks, knowing that although most of their prey won't take the bait, they just might entice some to bite. The FTC warns users to be suspicious of any official-looking e-mail message that asks for updates on personal or financial information and urges recipients to go directly to the Web site of the company to find out whether the request is legitimate. If you suspect you have been phished, forward the e-mail to [EMAIL PROTECTED] or call the FTC help line, 1-877-FTC-HELP. ______________________ SELECTED LINKS: The Contra Costa Times has an article called "'Phishing' latest Internet scam." http://www.bayarea.com/mld/cctimes/6356590.htm The Washington Post interviewed the Director of FTC's Bureau of Consumer Protection about phishing. http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/articles/A29476-2003Jul22.html?nav=hptoc_tn An Internet News article is called "FTC Goes Phishing, Nails Scammer." http://dc.internet.com/news/article.php/2238431 SearchSecurity offers a collection of Best Web Links for Securing the Internet and E-Commerce. http://searchsecurity.techtarget.com/bestWebLinks/0,289521,sid14_tax281909,00.html ______________________ RELATED TERMS: social engineering http://searchsecurity.techtarget.com/sDefinition/0,,sid14_gci531120,00.html e-mail spoofing http://searchsecurity.techtarget.com/sDefinition/0,,sid14_gci840262,00.html ______________________ TODAY'S TECH NEWS: ORACLE TAKES NEW TACK TO VERTICAL-SPECIFIC CRM The new Oracle E-Business Suite 11i.9 incorporates features designed for specific industries but delivers them in a way that differs from other CRM vendors. http://searchcrm.techtarget.com/originalContent/0,289142,sid11_gci916269,00.html PRICING FOR 'REAL-TIME' TOOLS TO BE REVEALED IN AUGUST Microsoft has added the word "live" to the name of its real-time communications software.
