An autonomous system is also sometimes referred to as a routing domain. An autonomous system is assigned a globally unique number, sometimes called an Autonomous System Number (ASN). Networks within an autonomous system communicate routing information to each other using an Interior Gateway Protocol (IGP). An autonomous system shares routing information with other autonomous systems using the Border Gateway Protocol (BGP). Previously, the Exterior Gateway Protocol (EGP) was used. In the future, the BGP is expected to be replaced with the OSI Inter-Domain Routing Protocol (IDRP). The Internet's protocol guideline for autonomous systems, after offering a definition similar to the one above, provides a more technical definition as follows: An AS is a connected group of one or more Internet Protocol prefixes run by one or more network operators which has a SINGLE and CLEARLY DEFINED routing policy. ______________________ SELECTED LINKS: The Internet's RFC 1930 provides "Guidelines for the creation, selection, and registration of an Autonomous System (AS)." ftp://ftp.rfc-editor.org/in-notes/rfc1930.txt RFC 1786 refers to autonomous systems in describing the Representation of IP Routing Policies in a Routing Registry. ftp://ftp.rfc-editor.org/in-notes/rfc1786.txt ______________________ RELATED TERMS: router http://searchnetworking.techtarget.com/sDefinition/0,,sid7_gci212924,00.html Interior Gateway Protocol http://searchsecurity.techtarget.com/sDefinition/0,,sid14_gci214018,00.html Border Gateway Protocol http://whatis.techtarget.com/definition/0,,sid9_gci213813,00.html Exterior Gateway Protocol http://whatis.techtarget.com/definition/0,,sid9_gci213930,00.html OSI http://searchnetworking.techtarget.com/sDefinition/0,,sid7_gci212725,00.html ______________________ TODAY'S TECH NEWS: IDC: USERS FIND BIG BENEFITS TO SERVER CONSOLIDATION A new IDC report says that users can realize ROI within a year when consolidating their Wintel servers onto an iSeries box. http://search400.techtarget.com/originalContent/0,289142,sid3_gci916621,00.html ORACLE/LINUX INTEREST HIGH, SPENDING FLAT Gartner Research says Oracle customers have been slow to adopt Linux, but one former MySQL customer says the Oracle-Linux combination saved his assets. http://searchoracle.techtarget.com/originalContent/0,289142,sid41_gci916662,00.html ACTUATE MAKES LATEST BI BUY The reporting tools maker is buying data integration vendor Nimble Technology.
