A T-1 line contains 24 channels, each with a data transfer capacity of 64 Kbps. The customer can rent some number of the 24 channels. The transmission method and speed of transfer remain the same. Overhead bits and framing are still used, but the unrented channels simply contain no data. T-3 lines (which offer 672 64 Kbps channels) are also sometimes offered as a fractional service. T-1 and fractional T-1 service are sometimes advertised as "point-to-point" service (from the customer to the service provider). ______________________ RELATED TERMS: T-carrier system http://searchnetworking.techtarget.com/sDefinition/0,,sid7_gci213096,00.html Kbps http://searchnetworking.techtarget.com/sDefinition/0,,sid7_gci212436,00.html ______________________ TODAY'S TECH NEWS: MICROSOFT EATS CROW TO PROTECT USERS If the folks at Microsoft responsible for Windows security aren't jumping out of their office windows, it's probably because those windows are secured, unlike their OS. http://searchwin2000.techtarget.com/originalContent/0,289142,sid1_gci920765,00.html DBAS STRIVE FOR CODE OF ETHICS For the first time, a session at The Data Warehouse Institute (TDWI) annual conference was dedicated to establishing a code of ethics for database administrators. http://searchdatabase.techtarget.com/originalContent/0,289142,sid13_gci920641,00.html MOBILE MESSAGING GETS A PUSH An emerging technology called push messaging is helping mobile messaging users to get information instantly without tedious button pressing.
