The specification was originally submitted by Microsoft and IBM. DIME is similar to but somewhat simpler than the Internet's Multi-Purpose Internet Mail Extensions (MIME) protocol. The attached or encapsulated files in a DIME message are defined by application and are called payloads. A single message can contain payloads having multiple applications. For example, an image file, a text file, a program, and an audio file can be attached to a single e-mail message. DIME messages can be nested. That is, a payload can itself be a DIME message. The contents of DIME messages are defined by records. Each record specifies the payload size in bytes, the payload content type, and other information. Large payloads can be broken down into smaller payloads, each with their own individual record, if necessary to accommodate the buffer capacity at the source and/or destination. ______________________ RELATED TERMS: Simple Object Access Protocol http://searchwebservices.techtarget.com/sDefinition/0,,sid26_gci214295,00.html Multi-Purpose Internet Mail Extensions http://searchwebservices.techtarget.com/sDefinition/0,,sid26_gci212576,00.html buffer http://whatis.techtarget.com/definition/0,,sid9_gci211713,00.html ______________________ SELECTED LINKS: IBM Developer Works provides the DIME specification. http://www-106.ibm.com/developerworks/webservices/library/ws-dime/ Microsoft Journal for Developers describes how DIME works. http://msdn.microsoft.com/msdnmag/issues/02/12/DIME/ SearchWebServices.com offers links to further information. http://searchwebservices.techtarget.com/search/1,293876,sid26,00.html?filter=on&query=DIME&ctype=ALL&anum=&within=text ______________________ TODAY'S TECH NEWS: MAINFRAME STILL KING OF DATA CENTER, BUT THE JOB IS CHANGING As the industry evolves, the mainframe will remain king of the data center.
