Like other types of filtering programs, a spam filter looks for certain criteria on which it bases judgments. For example, the simplest and earliest versions (such as the one available with Microsoft's Hotmail) can be set to watch for particular words in the subject line of messages and to exclude these from the user's inbox. This method is not especially effective, too often omitting perfectly legitimate messages (these are called false positives) and letting actual spam through. More sophisticated programs, such as Bayesian filters or other heuristic filters, attempt to identify spam through suspicious word patterns or word frequency. ______________________ RELATED TERMS: filter http://whatis.techtarget.com/definition/0,,sid9_gci212121,00.html?track=NL-34 heuristic http://searchcio.techtarget.com/sDefinition/0,,sid19_gci212246,00.html?track=NL-34 ______________________ SELECTED LINKS: Marshall Brain explains more about "Stopping Spam." http://computer.howstuffworks.com/spam4.htm Paul Graham describes his efforts to create an effective spam filter. http://www.paulgraham.com/better.html ______________________ TODAY'S TECH NEWS: IBM UNVEILS SAN FILE SYSTEM The anticipated arrival of IBM's global storage file system has come to pass.
