This mode of operation is sometimes given to a network snoop server that captures and saves all packets for analysis (for example, for monitoring network usage). 2) In an Ethernet local area network (LAN), promiscuous mode is a mode of operation in which every data packet transmitted can be received and read by a network adapter. Promiscuous mode must be supported by each network adapter as well as by the input/output driver in the host operating system. Promiscuous mode is often used to monitor network activity. Promiscuous mode is the opposite of non-promiscuous mode. When a data packet is transmitted in non-promiscuous mode, all the LAN devices "listen to" the data to determine if the network address included in the data packet is theirs. If it isn't, the data packet is passed onto the next LAN device until the device with the correct network address is reached. That device then receives and reads the data. _______________________ RELATED TERMS: snoop server http://searchsecurity.techtarget.com/sDefinition/0,,sid14_gci773799,00.html?track=NL-34 Ethernet http://searchnetworking.techtarget.com/sDefinition/0,,sid7_gci212080,00.html?track=NL-34 local area network http://searchnetworking.techtarget.com/sDefinition/0,,sid7_gci212495,00.html?track=NL-34 packet http://searchnetworking.techtarget.com/sDefinition/0,,sid7_gci212736,00.html?track=NL-34 adapter http://whatis.techtarget.com/definition/0,,sid9_gci211524,00.html?track=NL-34 driver http://searchstorage.techtarget.com/sDefinition/0,,sid5_gci212002,00.html?track=NL-34 address http://searchnetworking.techtarget.com/sDefinition/0,,sid7_gci211528,00.html?track=NL-34 ______________________ SELECTED LINKS: SearchSecurity.com provides links to sites with tips about security vulnerability. http://searchsecurity.techtarget.com/bestWebLinks/0,,sid14_tax281934,00.html?track=NL-34 ______________________ TODAY'S TECH NEWS: ANALYSIS: MICROSOFT UNDERSTANDS THE GREAT MOTIVATOR For the longest time, Microsoft has been pleading with users to set up firewalls and regularly patch their software.
