Creating a database can be like creating a universe, only more complicated. At least when the universe was created, there was no one around to complain. -- Michael J. Hernandez, author of Database Design for Mere Mortals
Okay, maybe I don't really know what creating a universe is like, but after having created databases, I can certainly imagine that there are a lot of similarities: A database is often a complex system; its components and the relationships among them can be difficult to configure; and even when you think you've got everything pinned down, your creations will frequently behave in an unpredictable, seemingly illogical, and not necessarily desirable manner. And that's why, when you set out to create a universe -- or a database -- you'd be well-advised to prepare carefully before you start!
This week, in our continuing Learn IT series, we help you get a handle on the database. We get you started with the answers to questions ranging from "What is a database?" to "What is normalization, and why do I need to know?" There's a handy printable glossary and links to a lot of great, in-depth information if you want to learn more. Pay attention -- there will be a quiz!
