There are various ways in which this can be done; the best method depends on the application. In biometric security systems, capture is the acquisition of, or the process of acquiring, an identifying characteristic such as a finger image, palm image, facial image, iris print, or voice print. (All but the last of these examples involves video data; the last involves audio data.) In order to capture the data, a transducer is employed that converts the actual image or sound into a digital file. The file is then stored. At a later time, it can be analyzed by a computer, or compared with other files in a database to verify identity or to provide authorization to enter a secured system. Most serious computer users are familiar with the term screen capture. The intent of a screen capture is to store the image on a monitor or display exactly as it appears at a specific time. This can sometimes (but not always) be done by hitting the "print screen" key, in which case the image appears as a bitmap file in the clipboard. It can also be done by photographing the display screen with a digital camera external to the computer. ______________________ RELATED TERMS: biometric http://searchsecurity.techtarget.com/sDefinition/0,,sid14_gci211666,00.html?track=NL-34&ad=479195 screen capture http://whatis.techtarget.com/definition/0,,sid9_gci497372,00.html?track=NL-34&ad=479195 ______________________ SELECTED LINKS: Simo Huopio of Helsinki University of Technology discusses biometric capture technologies. http://www.tml.hut.fi/Opinnot/Tik-110.501/1998/papers/12biometric/biometric.htm#ch3.3 SearchSecurity.com offers selected links to articles about biometrics. http://searchsecurity.techtarget.com/bestWebLinks/0,289521,sid14_tax289190,00.html?track=NL-34&ad=479195 _____________________ TODAY'S TECH NEWS: GATES ADDS HIS VOICE TO SPEECH, DEVELOPER MESSAGE Microsoft chairman Bill Gates pitched developers on the software maker's latest speech recognition and software development tools during a keynote address on Wednesday. http://searchwin2000.techtarget.com/originalContent/0,289142,sid1_gci956665,00.html?track=NL-34&ad=479195 EDI MAINTAINS ENTERPRISE RELEVANCE XML may be a rising star when it comes to exchanging business information, but standby EDI still has a presence in the enterprise. http://searchwebservices.techtarget.com/originalContent/0,289142,sid26_gci956694,00.html?track=NL-34&ad=479195 ORACLE BOOSTS SARBANES-OXLEY OFFERINGS Oracle this week released the latest version of its Internal Controls Manager, a module within E-Business Suite that addresses Sarbanes-Oxley compliance. http://searchoracle.techtarget.com/originalContent/0,289142,sid41_gci956734,00.html?track=NL-34&ad=479195 >> Catch up on all the latest IT news at http://searchtechtarget.techtarget.com?track=NL-34&ad=479195 ______________________ SECRET WORD-OF-THE-DAY | What is IT?
