THE WHATIS.COM WORD-OF-THE-DAY May 17, 2004 DVD _____________ SPONSORED BY: Fast guide to Windows storage
A number of factors are driving more data centers to run some -- if not all of their storage -- off a Windows-based platform. The move to open systems, coupled with Microsoft's recent involvement in storage, makes understanding the nuances of Windows-based storage all the more important. This guide has the latest news and technical resources you need to get up-to-speed on Windows storage. http://searchstorage.techtarget.com/originalContent/0,289142,sid5_gci964639,00.html?track=NL-34&ad=482933 ______________________ TODAY'S WORD: DVD Read our complete definition with hyperlinks at http://searchstorage.techtarget.com/sDefinition/0,,sid5_gci213923,00.html?track=NL-34&ad=482933 DVD is an optical disc technology with a 4.7 gigabyte storage capacity on a single-sided, one-layered disk, which is enough for a 133-minute movie. DVDs can be single- or double-sided, and can have two layers on each side; a double-sided, two-layered DVD will hold up to 17 gigabytes of video, audio, or other information. This compares to 650 megabytes (.65 gigabyte) of storage for a CD-ROM disk. DVD uses the MPEG-2 file and compression standard. MPEG-2 images have four times the resolution of MPEG-1 images and can be delivered at 60 interlaced fields per second where two fields constitute one image frame. (MPEG-1 can deliver 30 noninterlaced frames per second.) Audio quality on DVD is comparable to that of current audio compact discs. Formats: - DVD-Video is the format designed for full-length movies that work with your television set. - DVD-ROM is the type of drive and disc for use on computers. The DVD drive will usually also play regular CD-ROM discs and DVD-Video disks. - DVD-RAM is the writeable version. - DVD-Audio is a CD-replacement format. - There are a number of recordable DVD formats, including DVD-R for General, DVD-R for Authoring, DVD-RAM, DVD-RW, DVD+RW, and DVD+R. DVD was originally said to stand for digital video disc, and later for digital versatile disc. The current official stance of the DVD Forum is that the format should just be referred to as DVD. ______________________ RELATED TERMS: gigabyte http://searchstorage.techtarget.com/sDefinition/0,,sid5_gci212194,00.html?track=NL-34&ad=482933 MPEG http://whatis.techtarget.com/definition/0,,sid9_gci212601,00.html?track=NL-34&ad=482933 DVD-RAM http://searchstorage.techtarget.com/sDefinition/0,,sid5_gci854607,00.html?track=NL-34&ad=482933 DVD-Audio http://searchstorage.techtarget.com/sDefinition/0,,sid5_gci510035,00.html?track=NL-34&ad=482933 recordable DVD http://searchstorage.techtarget.com/sDefinition/0,,sid5_gci811282,00.html?track=NL-34&ad=482933 DVD Forum http://searchstorage.techtarget.com/sDefinition/0,,sid5_gci512919,00.html?track=NL-34&ad=482933 ______________________ SELECTED LINKS: You can find out more about DVD using links from Tristan Savatier's DVD Resources page. http://www.bok.net/~tristan/MPEG/dvd.html Jim Taylor provides a comprehensive DVD FAQ list. http://www.dvddemystified.com/dvdfaq.html _____________________ TODAY'S TECH NEWS: IBM DEEPENS SOA TIES WITH SECURITY DEAL IBM has partnered with four XML firewall vendors, offering support for their products in Tivoli Access Manager. http://searchwebservices.techtarget.com/originalContent/0,289142,sid26_gci965055,00.html?track=NL-34&ad=482933 WLAN CEOS LOOK TO THE FUTURE A group of WLAN executives told a group at N+I that 802.11 networks will soon be ubiquitous and taken for granted, but today's public hot spot business models may be in jeopardy. http://searchnetworking.techtarget.com/originalContent/0,289142,sid7_gci964896,00.html?track=NL-34&ad=482933 WHAT'S IN A NAME CHANGE?
