A distinction is sometimes made between data and information to the effect that information is the end product of data processing. Raw data that has undergone processing is sometimes referred to as cooked data. Although raw data has the potential to become "information," it requires selective extraction, organization, and sometimes analysis and formatting for presentation. For example, a point-of-sale terminal (POS terminal) in a busy supermarket collects huge volumes of raw data each day, but that data doesn't yield much information until it is processed. Once processed, the data may indicate the particular items that each customer buys, when they buy them, and at what price. Such information can be further subjected to predictive technology analysis to help the owner plan future marketing campaigns. As a result of processing, raw data sometimes ends up in a database, which enables the data to become accessible for further processing and analysis in a number of different ways. ______________________ RELATED TERMS: point-of-sale terminal http://searchcio.techtarget.com/sDefinition/0,,sid19_gci774854,00.html?track=NL-34&ad=486320 predictive technology http://whatis.techtarget.com/definition/0,,sid9_gci877661,00.html?track=NL-34&ad=486320 database http://searchdatabase.techtarget.com/sDefinition/0,,sid13_gci211895,00.html?track=NL-34&ad=486320 ______________________ SELECTED LINKS: Statistics Canada provides a tutorial about "Data processing." http://www.statcan.ca/english/edu/power/ch3/first3.htm SearchDatabase.com is a resource center for information about databases. http://searchdatabase.techtarget.com/?track=NL-34&ad=486320 _____________________ TODAY'S TECH NEWS: ONE YEAR LATER: EXPERTS EVALUATE CALIFORNIA'S DATA PROTECTION LAW Some experts believe the law's been crucial in getting organizations to closely examine their security measures, but others said it's had a chilling effect on additional security measures companies might be willing to take. http://searchsecurity.techtarget.com/originalContent/0,289142,sid14_gci991166,00.html?track=NL-34&ad=486320 E-MAIL ARCHIVING PUZZLES DECISION MAKERS New research suggests that nearly half of all companies are still unsure about what to do with their old e-mail. http://searchexchange.techtarget.com/originalContent/0,289142,sid43_gci970611,00.html?track=NL-34&ad=486320 SYBASE TOOLS TARGET COMPLIANCE REQUIREMENTS (June 21) Targeting customers who are weighed down in data and rushing to meet new compliance mandates, Sybase Inc. today released new archiving and replication tools for its Adaptive Server Enterprise (ASE) relational database. http://searchdatabase.techtarget.com/originalContent/0,289142,sid13_gci989564,00.html?track=NL-34&ad=486320 >> Catch up on all the latest IT news at http://searchtechtarget.techtarget.com?track=NL-34&ad=486320 ______________________ SECRET WORD-OF-THE-DAY This is the visual "handle" or display appearance you use to represent yourself in some computer games.
