This is a fairly new capability -- previously, Wi-Fi could only be used within a wireless LAN (WLAN). However, because hot spots have become increasingly common, and are located in closer proximity to each other, areas of coverage (called hot zones) can now measure hundreds of square miles. Similarly to the way that IP telephony reduces the costs of land-based telephone calls, routing mobile calls over the Internet makes them free, or at least much less expensive. According to John Jackson, a wireless technology analyst with The Yankee Group, Wi-Fi VoIP has "enormous" potential as an alternative to regular telephony. Nevertheless, experts point to security concerns and ease-of-use as stumbling blocks to the realization of that potential. At the recent VON Europe conference, Graham Rivers, former director of business development and strategy at T-Mobile predicted that, ultimately, Wi-Fi VoIP will overcome its initial problems: "I believe the impact of this technology will be massive, disruptive and chaotic, but also opportunistic. It could underpin true fixed-mobile convergence. But the challenge to deliver simplicity is colossal." ____________________ RELATED TERMS: wireless http://searchmobilecomputing.techtarget.com/sDefinition/0,,sid40_gci213380,00.html?track=NL-34&ad=487139 VoIP http://searchsmallbizit.techtarget.com/sDefinition/0,,sid44_gci214148,00.html?track=NL-34&ad=487139 802.11b http://searchmobilecomputing.techtarget.com/sDefinition/0,,sid40_gci892752,00.html?track=NL-34&ad=487139 Wi-Fi http://searchmobilecomputing.techtarget.com/sDefinition/0,,sid40_gci838865,00.html?track=NL-34&ad=487139 WLAN http://searchmobilecomputing.techtarget.com/sDefinition/0,,sid40_gci213379,00.html?track=NL-34&ad=487139 hot spot http://searchmobilecomputing.techtarget.com/sDefinition/0,,sid40_gci887196,00.html?track=NL-34&ad=487139 ______________________ SELECTED LINKS: SearchMobileComputing.com has an article called "VoIP buzz increases." http://searchmobilecomputing.techtarget.com/tip/1,289483,sid40_gci944609,00.html?track=NL-34&ad=487139 ____________________ TODAY'S TECH NEWS: ONLINE CHAT JUST AS EFFECTIVE AS THE PHONE A new survey bolsters some long-held assumptions about customer service and also offers some new insight into consumer preferences. http://searchcrm.techtarget.com/originalContent/0,289142,sid11_gci993292,00.html?track=NL-34&ad=487139 ENTERPRISES MUST BE PROACTIVE AGAINST PHISHING, REPORT SAYS E-mail scams are hurting the reputations of legitimate businesses, but there are technologies sprouting up to protect their interests, according to new research. http://searchexchange.techtarget.com/originalContent/0,289142,sid43_gci992917,00.html?track=NL-34&ad=487139 NEW TROJAN SPREADS VIA SPAM Most antivirus firms have labeled BackDoor-CGT a low risk.
