TODAY'S WORD: chiral fiber
......................................................................

Chiral fiber is a specialized optical fiber medium with its core
twisted into a helical shape. There are approximately 6,000 complete
twists per linear centimeter of core, which has a rectangular cross
section rather than the circular cross section typical of
conventional fiber optic media. The technology was developed by
Chiral Photonics, Inc., of Clifton, N.J.

The corkscrew-like shape of the core in a chiral fiber gives the
fiber special properties. In particular, it facilitates polarization
of light that passes through the fiber. Chiral fiber polarizers offer
promise for use in voltage monitoring devices, temperature and
pressure sensors, and gyroscopes for in-flight guidance. Chiral
fibers may also prove useful in the design of low-cost,
high-efficiency lasers, light filters, light modulators, and optical
sensors.
