Ping is a utility program that lets you verify that a particular IP address exists and can accept requests. It works by sending a very small Internet Control Message Protocol (ICMP) packet to a designated address and waiting for a response. Ping can be used diagnostically to find out if the host computer you are trying to reach is actually operating. It can also be used to measure network latency, the minimum time a network needs to send the smallest possible amount of data. The computer acronym "ping" was contrived to match the submariners' term for the sound of a returned sonar pulse. It stands for Packet Internet or Inter-Network Groper.
