Hi all, due to the vast response I got for the patch and instructions to get
this working I will supply a summary of what I did and a link to the patch.
First install the WhatsUp Gold SNMP Threshold Plug-in available from
Ipswitch, Inc.http://www.ipswitch.com
1) Download and extract the following files from SNMPCHK.ZIP into your
WhatsUp Gold program directory:
- SNMPCHK.TXT (installation instructions)
- SNMPCHK.BAT (batch script to install the plug-in)
- SNMPCHK.DLL (SNMP Threshold dll)
- SNMPCHK.HLP (Help file)
- SNMPCHK.CNT (Help contents file)
- SVSINST.EXE (application called by batch script)
2) Run SNMPCHK.BAT.
3) Restart WhatsUp Gold.
You will now find two new options under the Tools menu, namely, SNMP Graph
Utility and the SNMP Viewer as well as "SNMP Threshold" under Custom
Services.
Once you have installed the plug-in, you:
1) Define an SNMP value to monitor.
2) Turn on monitoring for particular devices.
To define a service to monitor:
1) Start WhatsUp Gold.
2) Select Custom Services from the View menu.
3) Click the New button. (In the New Service dialog box,
enter a name for the new service, select "SNMP Threshold"
as the type, and click OK.)
Tip: The OID our WUG currently monitors is:
CPU utilization:
1.3.6.1.2.1.25.3.3.1.2.2
(This OID is a value in % that is automatically calculated on the free CPU
over the last 60secs.)
Disk utilization
1.3.6.1.2.1.25.2.3.1.6.2
(This OID is a value of free disk space in allocation units, determine what
eg. 80% of the total free disk space in allocation units is and use this
value in the rule.)(see also the chkdsk command)
Note:
There is a bug in the current SNMP Agent, this value is not updated
automatically. (see link below)
http://support.microsoft.com/support/kb/articles/Q295/5/87.ASP?LN=EN-US&SD=g
n&FR=0&qry=snmp&rnk=26&src=DHCS_MSPSS_gn_SRCH&SPR=WIN2000
A patch was received from Microsoft and is available here.
http://home.worldonline.co.za/~kevinvb/Q295587_W2k_SP3_x86_en.exe
Select the new service in the list and click the Help button for further
instructions on defining a service to monitor and turning on monitoring for
particular devices.
Tip:
There are OIDs for Storage description, allocation units, size and free
space. The MIB Browser that comes with WUG is crappy, rather use a freeware
MIB Browser, called Getif, available from
http://www.wtcs.org/snmp4tpc/testing.htm (see screen dump below)
Note that in order to talk SNMP with a device you have to allow SNMP (UDP
ports 161 and 162) to and from the device as well as know the community
name of the device you will be monitoring. We had to open an Access
List/Firewall (ACL) to allow the WUG Server to talk SNMP with the devices.
Tip:
Initially when testing the process do all the testing from a single PC to
the local interface, ie. 127.0.0.1
Important:
To be able to talk SNMP with a device not only must the SNMP protocol be
allowed and the community name be known but also the SNMP Agent/Service has
to be running on the box and configured correctly.
To install the SNMP on Windows 2000/NT, perform the following;
Click Start -> Settings -> Control Panels and double-click Add/Remove
Programs.
Click the Add/Remove Windows Components button.
Click Management and Monitoring Tools and click the Details button.
Press the Simple Network Management Protocol check box and click Ok.
Click Next, and after the wizard finishes installing click Finished.
Under Control Panel -> Administrative Tools -> Services, is a list of all
Services running on the box, scroll down to SNMP Service and right click and
select Properties. Complete the fields under the Agent tag and select the
Physical ticbox.
Add the relevant community name and trap destination under the Traps and
Security tags.
This should be all that is required to talk SNMP with the relevant device.
Goodluck, if you have any problems just ask.
