Some devices support per port link state trap enabling and other more
granular trap configuration. or may want to explore if your devices support
this functionality. If there are only a few things you want to monitor on
your device, SNMP threshold checks do a nice job with them. A do agree with
you that the trap handler needs better filtering capabilities.

Kelly.... thanks for your response, but we have heard this already from
Ipswitch support.
Your suggestion doesn't cover for WUG not being able to seperate traps
and notices into enough bins.....

the problem is that devices usually do not fit WUG's limited capability
of choosing which traps to send notification for. When dumb device
sends 10's of traps for one event, all at the same level, WUG sends out
all the notifications swamping email and pager boxes.
(At least, after working with Ipswitch support and experimenting with
WUG for a year now we haven't figured it out. Maybe we are just too
dumb!)

What I need is some way to filter on text strings in trap/alert
messages, and decide which ones to pass on to my SMS phone box or pager.

If you only one to receive notification on specific SNMP traps, when you
are
assigning an alert to a device, check off the box next to "On SNMP trap"
and
in the blank box to the right of this option, include the designated
trap
numbers you wish to receive separated by a comma.

This way you will not receive notification on all traps for a specific
device, only those which you specify.

When you turn on notification for a device in WUG, you get all traps,
etc....
I'm swamping my SMS box, and it gets shutdown.....
anyone have a good filtering program that will just let thru the notices
I really want...

Thanks,
Rich
