I finally got a hold of someone there the knew something. It is true that the text messaging does not work. He told me about a feature where you can send a numeric page if voice mail picks up, but if you want to send only numeric page and not rely on the vm NOT picking up, ie just in case you answer the phone... there is a backdoor number for just sending numeric pages.
