Just a guess.......
Are you monitoring this device 24/7? If the device goes down during a
period in which monitoring is off, then comes back up during the period in
which monitoring is on, then wouldn't you see the device up log entry only?

We had one of our exchange servers took a dump last night, but no page.
I checked the log for this machine and this is what I found

20020411 080215 UP ghexch2 222.0.0.211 missed 16
20020411 074625 DOWN ghexch2 222.0.0.211 Timed Out
20020411 074215 UP ghexch2 222.0.0.211 missed 426
20020405 141957 UP ghexch2 222.0.0.211 missed 2
How can I have an up message without a down message? It missed 426
responses?
I'm running the current version of WUG 7.02
