John,
I did not find any specific examples in our knowledge base, but I did find an example from our Help:

Rate of Change in Value

Rate of Change (in variable units per second) - Enter the desired value
Failing Rate - You can set this to Above or Below (the specified rate)
Host is down when exceeded (enter a value) consecutive times
Example:
In looking at an error counter: The last several readings may have returned 7,000. If that number stays consistent, then there is no rate of change in value. However, if that number jumped to 14,500 in a 1-hour poll cycle, then 7,500 more errors occurred in 1 hour.

The Rate of Change is set to 2
The Failing is Above specified rate
The Host is down when exceeded 1 consecutive time
Then between the last two polls, we have a change in value of 7500. This is greater than 2 per second, and it exceeded this value at least 1 time (our Host is down setting), then the device is considered down.

Subject: [WhatsUp Forum] Rate of Change

Would someone provide me with an example of when you would want to configure a SNMP Custom Service and use the Rate of Change option when monitoring? My perception on its use, for example: when you wanted to monitor disk usage and be notified if the amount of free space is falling at a rapid rate. Is my perception correct? if not, how is it used?
