Jose,

Maybe if you let us know the brand & model of your switch/hub, this might
help people decide if your switch/hub can even be monitored.

The next question you could answer, do you know the IP number of your
switch/hub, if not, I'd assume even if it can support IP, the chances are,
it's not setup, or worse, is second hand, and was setup for another
companies network etc...

In the mean time, plug all your servers into the switch/hub, and when people
tell you that the servers are all dead, you can assume the switch/hub is
broken, this is a very effective way of monitoring, but perhaps not what
you're after? other simple methods are to walk past it and see if the lights
are flashing, mount a webcam so you can see the status of the lights from
your desk, or simply relocate the item to your desk, this will save a lot of
time also.

Richard
couldn't help myself!

Is your switch/hub managed? If it is not managed then you can not monitor
if it is powered on or not. It will be the same with any monitoring
software.

If it is managed then you can just monitor it using ICMP to the IP number or
SNMP if you have it on that switch.
