Title: monitor fax applications?
Skiff,

With a product that can't help itself.... you might be better to help it by automating a daily or twice daily restart of the service(s) which will fix possible memory leaks also. That's my typical approach for bad software anyway.

Otherwise, you'll need to find a way of querying the service... most likely read up on the problem with your vendor, they may have an option to handle, like a server retry/timeout setting?

You could look into a test process to ensure the full system is working end to end as follows;

1) Automatic fax to standalone fax machine every 15 minutes, big text with date & time showing.
2) Web cam pointing at fax paper output tray, connected to OCR package
3) OCR package scripted to capture date/time from image, submit to webserver form.
4) Web application to compare form submissions, publish "Fax is working" on webpage if ok.
5) WUG to monitor web page for words "Fax is working" otherwise page you.

If you wish to further test your telco is operational, you might look at installing the above in multiple locations, but not too many, or there will be no timeslots left on the fax system to send the real faxes.

Subject: [WhatsUp Forum] monitor fax applications?

Anybody out there monitoring a fax application with WUG? Our company currently uses an application call FaxStar. If the application loses connection with the exchange server the applications will not try to re-establish the connection. Monitoring the service of the application doesn't work as it is still running.
