We still use Bell Mobility pagers, which do support SMS.  I realize that this means carrying both a pager and a cell-phone, but the advantages are as follows:

Pager runs on a battery for over a month.  Therefore, it is never "off" or "out of battery"

Service is accessed by WUG via modem and copper phone line.  Therefore, it is not dependent on the LAN, WAN, SMTP Gateway, Internet, Local Phone Switch, etc.  This is important to us, because all of these are things that we monitor and if they are down, there is obviously no way of sending a message telling us that they are down.

The service is fast.  We find that most messages are sent out and received within 2 minutes.  The turn-around time with email over cell phones has been from a few minutes to a few hours in some cases.

The pagers work everywhere in Southwestern Ontario.  I accept that this is not good for people who travel all over the country at any given time, but we are usually "in the area".  Furthermore, the coverage extends to areas where our cell phones simply do not work at this time.

All of these factors have led us to use the pagers and not convert over to cell-phones to receive our WUG notifications.

I hope this helps.  Dan . . .

We just dumped AT&T.  We ended up going with Nextel.
