From my experience, I'd assume you are monitoring windows services with the NT plugin. If that is the case, the error you are seeing indicates a failure connecting to the target via RPC. Could be an authentication issue.

Thanks Mark for the prompt reply. We are running WUG on a Win2K AS SP4.
I was just concerned that it was flooding my System Event Log and not my Application Event Log. I assumed that this was generated by WUG but from what your answer infers that it is not WUG but the system itself (DCOM).
I will keep looking.
Thanks again.

What OS are you running on your WhatsUp Gold PC and on the target?
The error you describe is DCOM Event ID 10009.
Googling gives a couple of snippets:
>This error is also related with a DCOM/COM+ bug not releasing
>(consuming) TCP ports between 1024 and 5000 range under heavy load.
> This problem was first corrected in Win2k SP 2.
> More information can be found in Q290512.
And...
> The most likely cause for this is authentication
Obviously nothing to do with consumption of TCP ports, but something worth investigating.
Also...

Now, this is about Outlook accessing MSExchange... but it talks about DCOM
10009 down at the bottom. Are you running MS Exchange? Or rather, are you using the Whatsup Exchange Monitor? If you are, do the errors stop if you disable these particular checks whilst still running WhatsUp Gold?
Lastly, can you access the remote system by other mechanisms? ie, view the log file if working with events, or use a 3rd party WMI browser?

How can I keep WUG from flooding my System Event Log with messages like:
DCOM was unable to communicate with the computer xxx.xxx.xxx.xx using any of the configured protocols.
I am using WUG 8.03HF1.
Thanks!
