We monitor for up/down and internal battery temp.

The internal batt temp tends to run high (40 degrees celsius is not uncommon during an intitial charging cycle).  We set threshold alerts at 55C.  This is important for us because we have UPS units in remote closets throughout the building.  In the past, we found that the batteries have developed a shorted cell, but the charging circuitry just keeps on pumping in the current, making the batteries very hot.  So hot, infact, that you have to take the UPS apart to get the batteries out because the cases are all warped and won't slide out as usual.  They also start to boil off the sulphuric acid, leaving both a really bad smell, but also a spark hazard (can you say BOOM !!).  In all cases, this happened with APC SU700RM as well as 1000 and 1400 models.
