You are right about the disclaimer. The only "down" dependencie I use has to
do with an ISDN circuit that is used for back-up. I only check it if the
router serial interface is "down".

Hi Robert,

Thanks for the senario(!) Is it save to assume that you only use "up
dependencies"? Do you have a end user story regarding "down"
dependencies?

I assume your disclaimer is due to the fact that from WUGs perspective
the device is unreachable - but from the local site it is fine(?).

Now this may be the question you un-ask. (hehehe)

The main problem I face is acurate knowledge of remote lan equipment. If
there are 5 hops from my central monitoring system and the remote
device, I need to use dependencies to avoid false notifications. So...
Everymap has my central router and then the next router and so on until
my device. It gets even more complicated if there is a firewall
introduced between segments. Set-up like this works for the most part. I
do have a disclaimer at the bottom of the alerts to the local sites
stating that it is possible the device is up even though I report is as
being down.

I hope this gets things started for you. I also would like to see what
others have to say.

Hey All,

I'm interested in gathering end user stories on how you are using Up
(and Down) Dependencies on your maps. What is the basic value you gain
from this feature? (don't worry it's not going away)

We already know that there is a desire to be able to create
dependencies that span maps (although feel free to discuss further). And
we already know that it is a challenge to resolve invalid dependencies
through manipulating poll order. Those things aside - how are you using
them? - what's your polling dependency story?

Feel free to respond to the list if you would like others to view and
comment or feel free to just respond directly to me.
