You can't use WUG to query SNMP unless the remote device has SNMP enabled AND has the
appropriate MIBs installed for the OIDs that you are interested in.

A few years ago I set up several Sun SPARC Ultra servers. They came installed with
proprietary Solaris SNMP. This would allow me to query all the standard stuff, such
as ifDescr (1.3.6.1.2.1.2.2.1.2). If I remember correctly, I could also query
Sun-specific OIDs. However, I could not query anything for the Netscape proxy
servers running on these Ultras because I had not yet configured things appropriately.
Configured on the Ultras.. not on the WUG PC.

I removed the Solaris SNMP and replaced it with UCD-SNMP (now called NetSNMP). I
compiled this new SNMP with the HOST-RESOURCE MIB and then I was able to query a whole
pile of new info in the 1.3.6.1.2.1.25 tree that I had not been able to query
previously.

I still could not query anything for the Netscape proxy servers because I had
forgotten about them when setting up UCD-SNMP.

Do you need anything at all on the WUG side?

Strictly speaking.. No, it's not essential. You can monitor any OID as long as you
know what it is. Having the right MIBs compiled gives you the tree in SNMPView and
Nettools (and in the browse buttons in SNMPMon and SNMPGraph) but you can set up a
monitor without having the MIB. You can also set up a trap event, although you will
be constrained to basing it on numeric OID and not "friendly" OIDname.

One more thing. I have seen a lot of people running into problems because they get
the instance number wrong when specifying an OID. Or, more usually, they don't
specify it at all.

ie, 1.3.6.1.2.1.2.2.1.10 will get you nothing for ifInOctets on your router.
NetTools will report "NULL", which is technically correct.. it's the value in the
response packet. SNMPGraph and SNMPMon (debug log) will, more helpfully, report "No
such name".

For instance x you need 1.3.6.1.2.1.2.2.1.10.x (On my router x it would be 1 - 9).

Thanks for the response... Could pls tell me what is this "corresponding management
agents". Is this suppose to install on Client side or in WUG?
If you have any corresponding helpful URLs on "Dell servers monitoring using WUG" pls
forward us.

Thanks,
Bobby VR Kumar.

Re:
Re: Re: we have snmp monitors for the system state of every (major) hardware label. it
is nice to receive an abstract "hp system state down" and then check the insight
manager for further information. this monitor is triggered by raid, power supply,
temperature probes and so on. we designed these monitors for hp/compaq, fujitsu
siemens and dell.
