What you want to do here is something that is very straightforward in the upcoming WhatsUp Pro. You will be able to "share" a device between groups (the analog of WhatsUp Gold maps) and the device will only get polled once. Thus, the device might be in a group called "Head Office 3rd Floor" and also be in the group "FTP servers". You will then be able to do reports for both those groups and the device will show up in both reports.
The devices really are shared. Go to one group and add (say) an HTTP monitor to the device there, and that HTTP monitor will then show up on the same device in the other group.
