The signal has to travel via some type of RF signal, therefore they are both probably prone to the same type of area. I have not researched why we occasionally receive garbled beeps as well as pages, but I was able to throw out What's Up as the issue a long time ago.

It is more than likely the pager reception. This happens when I am in certain areas. It happens from message sources other than What's Up Gold as well.

I see this behavior when my pager is physically near it reception boundaries or I'm in a partial dead zone (on my pager 2 bars or lower, out of 5, means I may get garbled char's). I can't say I've ever had garbled char's as long as I'm in an area with good reception.
