Subject: [WhatsUp Forum] Inquiry from Ipswitch Regarding 100% CPU
utilization by nmservice.exe (Revised)

WhatsUp Customers:

Some users who have upgraded to WhatsUp Pro SP1 have reported that their
CPU utilization jumps to 100% and stays there. We are currently trying
to gather information from as many such users as possible. If you are
experiencing this issue, please provide answers to the following
questions:

PLEASE SEND FEEDBACK TO [EMAIL PROTECTED]

1. What other applications are currently installed and running on
the server housing WhatsUp? [anti-virus, mail server, ftp server, sql,
etc] Is the server a primary domain controller?

2. What virus protection are you running and what version? If you
are running an AV solution, are you running script scanning?

3. Are you using Local MSDE or Remote SQL? Are you using SQL Server
replication?

4. When does the CPU spike occur? When you launch the program,
when you login to the web interface, randomly during polling?

5. Are you using our web server or IIS?

6. Does the CPU problem go away when you disable the web server?
(note you would have to restart the process once it is in the 100% cpu
state)

7. Provide as much detail as possible n the types of things are you
monitoring (NT services, SNMP, TCP/IP checks etc)

8. Have you done any customization?

9. How many devices are being monitored?

10. What is the OS and language of the OS?

11. What Regional Settings (for time) are you using?

12. What type of network card are you using?

13. Would you send us a copy of your database?

14. Would you send us the exported registry hive under
HKLM\SOFTWARE\Ipswitch?

15. Were you running WUP 2005 and then upgraded to SP1 and then the
problem started?

16. Did you migrate from your data from old WhatsUp Gold data?

17. Are you seeing any patterns in the Event viewer to indicate a
problem with nmservice consistently?

18. What version of the Windows Scripting Host are you using? [To
determine the Windows Scripting Host Version and Build numbe, cut and
paste the following into a vbs file and execute: Wscript.Echo "Version:
" & WScript.Version Wscript.Echo "Build: " & Wscript.BuildVersion]

19. What version and build of Internet Explorer are you running?

20. Could you us with your provide a shutdown.log?

21. Restart your server, go to
http://127.0.0.1/NMConsole/images/ipswitch_log.gif. Check the cpu usage
of the nmservices.exe. Without performing any other action on the
server, do a hard refresh (CTRL+F5) and wait 1 minute then view the cpu
usage for the service again. Repeat this over 5 minutes, and note any
changes in the cpu usage for the service.

22. Are you interested in speaking directly with a developer to
further assist Ipswitch in troubleshooting this issue? If yes, then
please provide your name, contact information, and the best time for us
to contact you.
