Byron,

There are many different types of standalone environmental modules you can buy to monitor a data center. I usually recommend probes from Ravica http://www.ravica.com . They work well and are pretty inexpensive. The Bitsite2 is great because you can stick it almost anywhere.

I have had experience with Dell Open Manage sending good SNMP traps when hardware fails. I’m not too sure about temp alarms. There are some tricky things about compiling the MIB. If you find you can’t get them compiled, let me know. I may be able to help.

Subject: [WhatsUp Forum] Environmental controls

Does anyone have a lead on environmental controls that Whats Up Gold 8.0 can monitor?  I came in early this morning and the NOC was at 106 degrees.  The warning system that is in place and calls our campus police failed.  I need a backup.  Also I have a mixture of Dell servers from the old PowerEdge 4200s to the newer PW 1175s.  Does anyone know anything about environmental controls in these units that can shed some light on how I can monitor them?  Can I set up an SNMP trap or something to keep up with them?
