David,

I'm sure there are multiple reasons why you'd want to do this, however
everything is subject to proper functionality of the product and why it was
designed. I haven't loaded the incarnation of WUP2K5Pro (SP1a), however,
something to keep aware of in the end analysis directly out of the WUP users
guide on Pg.24 (Chap.4) is: "Device Troubleshooting? WhatsUp Professional is
not a troubleshooting tool. It will tell you
when your network goes up or down, but will not tell you what made your network
go down. For that, you will need to inspect the afflicted resource and its
respective documentation."

In short, if you run a server farm on directly of a router (or L3 Switch in our
case) like we do, and you are monitoring the specific ports that the server is
plugged into so you can quickly determine if a port is up or down, when a
server is reported as unavailable by end users, All SP1 and older incarnations
of WUP2k5Pro, will show the router is down, because a single port is down
(programmer logical thinking), which may or may not be critical to the
operation of the network, so you'll spend a awful lot of time trying to
decipher if the network is really down or not just because someone rebooted a
server attached to the router/L3-switch, and even worse, if proper device
dependancies are set up, then nothing past the router/L-3switch is checked
until the server comes back on line to "clear the outage of the router"). This
point alone makes this product unworthy to upgrade to in my own opinion. As I
said, I have not checked out the latest incarnation of the software (SP1a), so
I can not say if this issue has been addressed or not, and I'd seriously
suggest looking at how you use WUG now, to determine if WUP is really the way
you want to go (so far, we have not upgraded to WUP2k5Pro for production use),
and the only sure-fire way to do that is to set up a test box with WUP2k5Pro,
and run them side by side to determine if you loose any functionality with how
you use WUG now. On the bright side, there are many really great enhancements
over WUG which IPSwitch has highlighted in the features brochure found on their
WEB site as a result of the initial design of WUP2K5PRO, however you if the way
you use WUG is anything like most do, then what good are all the enhancements
if you have an unusable product for the way you work?

Just my nickels worth... take it all with a grain of salt and I'd suggest D/L'g
the trial version to compare it for yourself and not rely on others opinions
too much <wink>. Be sure to let us know what you thought of it after you tried
it out as any comments will be relevant to IPSwitch if they still monitor this
support method regularly.

I currently am running 8.0. I am looking for reasons that I might want
to upgrade to Professional. Any thoughts are welcome.

Thanks.
