Automatic behavior in HTML has been traditionally expressed through scripting. It's not hard to write a one-line script which automatically starts playback, but solutions based on scripting are easier to circumvent on the user side (and it's good).

-1 for |autoplay|.

+1 for |autoplay|

We may, or may not, like automatic audio/video playback, but the reality is, most, if not all, video sites automatically start video playback.

Question is, why not?

As a user, it's convenient for me to search for some video, click it and have it automatically play. Do I have to enable JavaScript for that? Or ... do I have to click the play button? Or ... wait, I have to enable JS for the play button as well. (*cough* forced branded UI *cough*)
