There's an even stronger tradition to mark quotes with quotation marks,
and yet we have the q element.


It would be interesting if such a new <sarcasm> element would provide a
method of specifying the real meaning.

For example...

   <p>
       That's <sarcasm meaning="the smallest thing I've ever
seen">huge</sarcasm>!
   </p>
