The primary purpose of the display attribute is to regulate layout. That an element with no display is not visible is only a side effect. As long as there is no public standard for sound layout (the composers' and arrangers' know-how has not permeated to the Web yet and the acronym AUI is not commonly recognized), applying the display attribute to sound seems to be an unmotivated extrapolation.
