They can. See the spec: "The types of link indicated (the relationships) are given by the value of the rel attribute, which, if present, must have a value that is a set of space-separated tokens." http://www.whatwg.org/specs/web-apps/current-work/multipage/semantics.html#attr-link-rel It's allowed to have multiple types separated by spaces. This is common in some cases, like rel="alternate stylesheet".
