I don't have experience with Confluence so my guess is as good as

I figures as much :). The templates can hide quite some information if
you remove too much. The templates also give too little control for
the generated markup though. We'll have to create our own theme to do
so.

I only had about 3 hours to toy with confluence so far, and the
autoexport plugin is on my next to add list.

I think the existing sites don't have very customized template so far.
Most projects @apache don't mind a more 'developer' centric view of
their websites (i.e. ugly).

I tried installing the download, and yep, it didn't work. NIce
stacktrace, but it was 1am so I figured time to go to bed.
Well, I'm running Confluence 2.1.5 (which is downloadable & was the
one Apache was running before their upgrade) with the 'released'
plugin, so that's an alternative option.
