VOTE: apply WICKET-298 to Wicket 1.2.x

I'd like to apply the fix for issue WICKET-298
(http://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/WICKET-298) to Wicket 1.2.x. The
fix is completely transparent/ doesn't break the API.
