Done, I reverted the backport of this change. When I first put
this in the backports page I didn't know that the code was broken
and unnecessary, just noticed a difference between the two
branches.
However I'm sure that there are bug fixes and improvements in
trunk that will never make it in 1.3, just because of the
tremendous time it takes to diff the two branches, because the
differences are difficult to interpret, and because the changes
that occured a long time ago are not likely to be "supported"
anymore.
