actually, the way things are structured, you probably CAN do this. it's just not advisable and we want to provide a way for people to do things right.

It would be nice to be able to do that. However this is against the HTML specs. So, even though it will probably work in a lot of cases, sooner or later not confirming to the specs/ standards will get us into trouble.
