I agree this discussion is going on for way to long now.
However I don't agree with you that not being able to access the inner
html elements of a wicket component is necessarily a bad thing.

Suppose I only build complex components for wicket (multiple input
fields and or heavy scripting inside), then I should be able to decide
if I want to make my components black box or completely open. And
because I can choose between using (generated) id's or the wicket
attribute I can do it both ways.
In the documentation that comes with my component I can then inform the
user which element is accessible by script and or which css classes he
can use.

Anyway that's how I see it.

Maurice,

        This is exactly why I keep on saying this idea is a nonstarter:
because you lose the ability to reference your component using JS or
CSS which is a very big deal.
