err... correct me if I'm wrong, but the lack of a DTD *is* the problem. Xerces is telling you:
NAMESPACE_ERR "An attempt is made to create or change an object in a way which is incorrect with regard to namespaces."
right... but this implies that Xerces is doing some sort of internal validation. That is, it has some sort of DTD it is working against. I suspect that even if you don't specify an HTML DTD, it uses some internal version. Anyway, and it tries validating the HTML code when it runs into "wicket:id" and flags it as invalid because as far as it knows, it is. Unless you supply it with a DTD that indicates otherwise, it won't know. You are asking for a way to have it be less strict when parsing HTML? If you know of a less strict HTML DTD, try pointing Xerces at it.
My 2 cents is that we should just work on the Wicket DTD. We need one anyway (we already have a RFE for this) so why not just make one and kill both birds with one stone?

You don't need to modify the HTML DTD/schema. Namespaces, and that is what they are for, allow you to specify your own (additional) namespace incl. the associated DTD/schema. E..g.
<html xmlns:xhtml="http:/...." xmlns:wicket="http://....."; >
you keep them completely separate and you may add as many namespaces as you like.
