IMO, inheritance is much better then borders. I have done a few simple practice projects with a base page and I liked it muuuuch more then using borders. It is completely object-oriented and awesome. The ability to extend one page from another to create tiles-like layout management was the best feature of wicket for me - it is not possible even in tapestry, not mentioning JSP based frameworks. I have sent an email to this list some time ago. I think that extending pages should be a "good practice" when using wicket.
