I agree utf-8 is one of the best charset there is
it is just a nice compressing charset of all the utf chars..
doesn't take more space with simple chars. Only with large multi byte
chars
the overhead is a bit more the plain utf-16 (or 24) because of the
compression bits at front)

Not necessarily. This is the beauty of utf-8 over utf-16 that as long
as you stay in ASCII zone, you have one byte per character, and as
long as you use latin letters, you won't see a difference, it is the
same as ASCII in the lower 7-bit segment. Well, some artefacts like
apostrophes may change to funny characters, but overall text will be
readable and one-byte-per-character. Only when you use cyrillic or
chinese or whatever-non-latin, you would get multibyte character.
So utf-8 is imho a great choice.
