No, I'm afraid that wouldn't help. URLS without session id would create
new URL. I don't think it's desired behavior.
I meant ...would create new session (not new URL).
I don't even think we have any problem to solve here, as google indexes
wicket examples pretty well.

i can change the code where we generate bookmarkable urls that we
don't call encodeUrl()
Can we do that? Then there will be no session info on those urls.

But they do index them. They just ignore the session id and everyhing
in url that follows it.
But if you really don't want want session id's in url the solution
exists. Just detect the user agent, and if it's google (yahoo, etc)
just don't call the EncodeURL for your urls. Again, a servlet filter
could do this completely transparently. (I know, I'm quite fond of
servlet filters :))

I think the important point to remember here is that Google
crawlers ignore pages with session-ids *on purpose*. Maybe they
don't recognize PHP session ids yet, but one day they will. Ideally
we should not be trying to out-smart their crawlers, we should find
a more reliable way to provide consistent static-like bookmarkable
pages to crawlers ideally with as little query arguments as possible
and no funky characters in the URL.
Once we do that, we can go about testing this against popular
search engines and see what happens. My site gets hit by a handful
of search engines daily and I suspect Wicket's pages do too. Why not
setup a test area on the Wicket website and track how well it gets
indexed? Which pages get indexed and which don't and why...?

Note that requiring cookies might prevent the crawler from
indexing your pages.
This is further discussed here:
http://www.searchengineguide.com/whalen/2004/0210_jw1.html and
http://www.optimizekit.com/kb/categories/Do's-and-Dont's/
Major points here: crawlers will absolutely refuse to index
pages with cookies or jsessionids.
But this is not true. Crawlers do index urls with session ids. When
session id is given as page parameter (like in PHP), crawlers index
the url, but with session id and everything after it discarded.
Now the problem with java is that the session id is not passed as
parameters, but it's passed as a part of URL before the query
string. But it think it is possible to tweak this (using a servlet
filter with ServletResponseWrapper overrinding the defualt
encodeURL implementation) for example.

If I had a choice between decent back support versus getting
indexed by Google, I'd choose the latter :) Hopefully we can do both.

Nope, we do need a session for everything except a trivial page
(and from the framework to figure out whether the page is
'trivial' that would involve some major hacking). EVERYTHING that
can trigger a 'postback', be it forms, links or whatever, needs
that page to be in the session.
It might be a feature request for our next version (1.2 that is)
when we tackle the whole stateless page thing (if we ever tackle
that succesfully, as currently the disadvantages seem to be
greater than the very few advantages it would get you... but
that's another discussion for some other time). But for 1.0.1/
1.1, we can't change it.

First, I like the new setPageAlias() functionality :)
I still don't understand however why one needs to store the
Page component ID on the session (at least for bookmarkable
pages the first time they are hit). Also, Eelco previously
mentioned that jsessionid is only showing up because we're
creating a session. My point is, we *shouldn't* be creating a
session for bookmarkable pages unless for example the page
contains a form, and someone submits it. We should be creating
session on-demand, not right away. Maybe once I understand more
about why we need path=X, this will make more sense.
Thanks,
