It's definitely a syntactic sugar kind of thing. I've got a form right now with many text boxes that represent complex user types and it seems tedious to do all that validation and conversion after the submit, or to override updateModel() on every component.
I never thought about doing it as a model though. I think I'm just going to do that so there's no need to petition for it to be part of the core.
