It utilizes a host of web services, including many from OCLC, and will take several paths depending on what it finds at various stages.
This is done for purposes of searching, browsing, discovery, translation, mapping, semantic reasoning, subject indexing and classification, harvesting, alerting etc.
More importantly, there are specific options when Zotero recognizes a page it knows how to scrape from: you see an icon in the location bar, like the RSS icon when Firefox discovers a feed. There are three key strategies for finding resources: colleagues' recommendations, chaining from bibliographies and citations; and search engines and other web resources.

It is suggested that better signalling of different library roles, and of the expert advice that is available would help here.
They are working towards a wider range of 'research support services' of which the institutional repository may be a part, and towards a new sense of discovery in a very changed network world. This does away with the need to struggle with multiple players, and supports the easy linking and embedding which is promoted by YouTube. As it turns out, that's just how Jeff Bezos sees it. Users tended not to turn to librarians for support in the search phase; they are most likely to ask for assistance in the retrieval phase.
Unless, again, it is qualified in use.
These are wide-ranging and it is instructive to see what they think is important or advisable.
The academic library community does not have non commercial alternatives in a similar way. And responses to the idea of a 'people who borrowed this also borrowed that' type of service were positive.
They report some support for the idea of 'bookable' library advice at the point of need, as, for example, when writing an assignment. The Flickr staging post puts the entry process closer to the user flow, as potential users may already be familiar with it, and it provides other relevent services. You will notice that I use it in slightly different ways above.
It is also interesting to see the focus on national collaboration, and working with national organizations to create shared approaches.
It also provides some useful framing approaches, helpfully shaping a wide range of materials. They reported little support for a 'subscription-based software development corporation'.
In the notebook were pasted various 'provocative' statements. Currently it checks prices in several book buying sites, will look in selected library sites, or will interact with Worldcat. Success will depend on incentives to search engines to participate.
Often used in a neutral business sense, it is not surprising - given what may be at stake - that sometimes discussion of sourcing is shot through with political preferences or emotional attachment.
It will be based on a database of people and organisations with records contributed from a variety of sources including the Australian Name Authority File.
There were 'field studies' at several libraries, contextual interviews based on these, interviews with library staff, and followup workshops where earlier results were used to shape questions. CURL, for non-UK readers, is the consortium of research libraries in the UK and Ireland.
Interestingly, the main Google search engine is not included.

I also wondered about the costs of open source development and support. This section also talks about responses to sugestions about better visibility for library staff and their specialities, and about the physical library. We can see a trend from database, to website to workflow.
