Simple solution to a simple problem:

in form constructor:

            List selectionList = new ArrayList();
            selectionList.add("Mand");
            selectionList.add("Kvinde");
            gender = new DropDownChoice("gender", new Model(new String()), 
selectionList);
            add(gender);


onSubmit() :

             int genderPojo = Integer.parseInt(gender.getValue()); // Index on 
selected item in dropdown
                member.setGender(genderPojo == 0 ? 1:2); // Convert gender to 
int in pojo
