It is really cool stuff you and Phil are discussing! With something like this Wicket will definitely be a very productive framework to use.
I think your HTML example is just right. In one of my applications I have built something similar, only less sophisticated and done the hard way :) Having the filtering integrated in the table makes it very compact, nice. A couple of questions: I think you should be able to have some control over the "layout" of lists. Like Phil suggests. Do you agree? Also: Would it be possible to extend/modify/replace default edit forms? A lot of times this is not going to be necessary, but I think you need to have the ability.
