I'm not confused, though I still think the link general functionality is
"confusing" because it's different for external vs. internal links. Believe
it or not, I started this discussion knowing that ExternalLink points to
external resources.

I use external links often because I work on an application that is still
mostly struts and the new parts have to integrate with the old parts. 

Otherwise, it's easy to imagine dynamic links to Google maps, or imdb, or
amazon. Dynamic linking to things outside of one's own Web application is
part of life on the Internet, and not very special if you ask me.
