I believe the request to include sources was from a Wicket user, not anyone directly involved with Maven. Then the maven guy jumped in and said how to do it with Maven 2...
Anyway, the sources are really helpful to people using Maven with the eclipse plug-in, because eclipse is stubborn and won't link the jars to their sources otherwise. The user who asked for sources has since uploaded a jar bundle with them himself, so I hope we'll be all set soon.
