BTW I just checked in a special attribute modifier that makes this more easier:
item.add(new AttributeAppender("class", isHot() ? HOTMODEL : NOTMODEL, " "));
Will take a while before it is available on anon cvs though.
You can find it in wicket.behavior.AttributeAppender
